The most easily accessible of all Glaciers, Pindari is over 3.2 km in length and 1.5 kms wide. Well within the reach of any trekker in six to seven days, it rewards a visit well paid any time between summers and early winters.

A Trek to Pindari Glacier

Trekking in India is incomplete if you have not trekked Pindari Glacier. This glacier is situated in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand between snowcapped NANDA DEVI and NANDAKOT mountains and has lured mountaineers and trekkers since the last century. 

It owes its existence primarily to the vast quantities of snow precipitated from the Nanda Devi and other surrounding summits of the Greater Himalayan range. The locals proudly refer to it as the Soul of Kumaon. It is one of the most easily accessible of all the Himalayan glaciers and is well within the reach of anyone who wishes to go for a trek.

Location of Pindari Glacier

Pindari Glacier is situated at an altitude of 3,353mts above sea level in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. Kafni Glacier is situated to the right of Pindari Glacier with route diverting from Dwali. Kafni Glacier is situated at an elevation of 3,860mts above sea level. 

General Description of the trek

Trek to Pindari Glacier and Kafni Glacier are quite long but easy to complete in comparison with other glacier treks of India. The Himalayan region of Kumaon is enriched with scenic natural beauty beyond belief.

Pindari Glacier has invariably lured mountaineers and trekkers because it offers varied splendors of nature and is one of the easiest accessible Himalayan glaciers. Pindari Glacier lies on the edge of Nanda Devi (7,816), which is the highest peak of India. Pindari is a big and steep glacier measuring 3.2km in length and 1.5km in breadth. Zero Point of Pindari Glacier is situated at a breathtaking altitude of 3,660mts above sea-level, 5km ahead of Phurkia.

Pindari Glacier is the source of Pindar River which meets with Alaknanda River at the confluence of Karnaprayag. The trekking route to the glacier traverses along the southern wilderness of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary offering captivating and invigorating views of peaks like Panwali Dwar (6,683m) and Maiktoli (6,803m). Trek to Pindari Glacier is a "soft adventure" experience, within the capacity of amateur trekkers in love with nature and its pristine glory. 

Perched at an astounding elevation of 3,860mts above sea level, Kafni Glacier is situated to the right of Pindari Glacier. The route to Kafni Glacier and Pindari Glacier is exactly the same till Dwali. The trail to Kafni Glacier diverts from Dwali. Kafni Glacier is situated 12kms beyond Dwali. It is an exquisite and untouched place situated on the east side of Pindar valley, at the footsteps of Nanda Kot peak. This region has its own charm and allures with the solitude terrain. The trekking trail is rich in flora and fauna. Trek to Kafni glacier is visually captivating and it ends up at the foot of Nandakot parbat (6,860m). 

Pindari Glacier Sample Tour Itinerary

Day 01: Kathgodam – Bageshwar - Loharkhet
Driving – 210kms, 6-7hrs
After having breakfast, drive from Kathgodam to Bageshwar via Almora. Explore the town of Bageshwar and visit the old Bagnath temple at the confluence of Saryu and Gomti River. Buy all necessary things from the market of Bageshwar. After lunch head towards Loharkhet and reach by evening. Arrange for guide and porter the same day if required. KMVN has Rest houses in Loharkhet. Overnight in Loharkhet.

Day 02: Loharkhet - Dhakuri
Trekking – 10kms, 5hrs
Level – Easy
Loharkhet is situated at an elevation of 1,760mts above sea level. Start first step of your trek to Pindari and Kafni Glacier. The trek is easy but quite steep and goes through dense forest. After following the trail for few more kilometers from Dhakuri Khal you reach Dhakuri. View of snow capped peaks of southern wall of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary is visible from Dhakuri Khal. Dhakuri is situated at an elevation of 2,680mts amidst dense forest. Overnight in Dhakuri.

Day 03: Dhakuri - Khati
Trekking – 9kms, 5hrs
Level – Easy
Khati is the biggest village that you will come across on the trek to Pindari Glacier. The trail passes through thick forest of Rhododendrons. It is the last village en route Pindari and Kafni glacier, situated at an elevation of 2,210mts above sea level. You can charge your batteries by paying to run the generator. KMVN rest house is situated 500mts ahead of Khati village. Khati is situated on the banks of Pindar River. It is believed that the hospitable villagers are descendents of the race who provided pandavas with shelter. Overnight in Khati.

Day 04: Khati - Dwali
Trekking – 11kms, 6hrs
Level – Easy
Start after having a good breakfast at Khati. Today’s trek goes along with Pindar River with two wooden bridges to cross. You can have tea and maggi at Himalayan Hotel, a small dhabha en route. Dwali is picturesquely situated at an elevation of 2,575mts above sea level. Overnight in Dwali.

Day 05: Dwali - Phurkia
Trekking – 5kms, 3hrs
Level – Moderate
The 5km trek from Dwali to Phurkia is steep and graded at moderate level. Cross the frozen stream and see the dwindling of forest as you climb. Phurkiya is the last place en route Pindari Glacier where you can find KMVN hut. There is beautiful waterfall just before Phurkia where you can rest for a while. Phurkia is a picturesque place blessed with natural beauteousness. It is situated at an elevation of 3,250mts above sea level. Overnight in Phurkia.

Day 06: Phurkia – Zero Point – Phurkia - Dwali
Trekking – 15kms, 7hrs
Level – Moderate
The trek from Phurkia to Zero Point of Pindari Glacier is visually captivating as it offers spectacular view of the mighty Himalayan range. Start early if you want to spend more time at the Zero Point. The mounth of the Pindari Glacier is named as Zero Point and it situated at an astounding elevation of 3,660mts above sea level. One kilometer before the Zero Point you will see a Babaji’s house who serves food to the people who makes it upto there. Trekking further from Zero Point on Pindari Glacier requires special equipments and experience. After exploring the praiseworthy beauty of Pindari Glacier trek back to Dwali. Overnight in Dwali.

Day 07: Dwali – Kafni Glacier
Trekking – 12kms, 6hrs
Level – Moderate
The Kafni Glacier is situated to the left of Pindar valley. The major Himalayan peaks visible from Kafni Glacier are Nanda Kot (6,806mts) and Nanda Bhanar (6,104mts). Bayaligar is situated 2kms before Kafni Glacier at an altitude of 3,860mts above sea level. The region or Kafni Glacier has its own charm and allures with the solitude terrain it presents. Overnight in Kafni.

Day 08: Kafni Glacier - Dwali
Trekking – 12kms, 5hrs
Level – Easy
After exploring the beauty and surrounding area of Kafni Glacier, trek back to Dwali. Return via Bayaligar with trail gradually descending to Dwali. Overnight in Dwali.

Day 09: Dwali – Khati - Dhakuri
Trekking – 20kms, 7-8hrs
Level – Easy
Trek back downwards to Khati and then to Dhakuri the same day. Carry back with you unforgettable memories and adventurous experience by giving your presence to mountains. Overnight in Dhakuri. 

Day 10: Dhakuri – Loharkhet – Almora - Kathgodam
Trekking – 10kms, 4hrs
Driving – 210kms, 7hrs
Level – Easy
After breakfast follow the downward trail all the way to Loharkhet. Drive to Kathgodam via town of Almora.
